Working for No Pay?
Sharing time with folks that are new to the area and culture is fun! I am reminded about how much a person learns while living in a country unfamiliar to them....... it then takes a turn and becomes a "normal" way of life....until you begin to share the little things that you have learned with some one else....... BUT these little things make a BIG difference to others~
Take for instance the baggers in the larger grocery store chains ~ They come to work ~ are escorted out by the leader and are given bags to go and bag your groceries with. These people are not paid an hourly wage, they are paid by you ..the consumer...the one that appreciates your things being bagged up. I know you can do it in your own...but that is not the point. This is a job that makes them money, and the money comes from you
Well - How much do you tip these baggers??? I hear the norm being 10% of your bill. I go with the flow and accommodate as my intuition says...The older the person, the more generous I become.
I was skeptical of this information when I first heard it. SO I went and spoke with the managers at Soriana's, Mega, and Bodega ...they all confirmed this interesting fact. The fact that these folks are willing to work and not beg is very much appreciated by me
It may not be what some Americans or Canadians call ..."right"...but we are in a country that believes it is right for them - and I for one will not try to change something that is working well for them...after all...I am a visitor in their country.....
